WOTRO works on new funding opportunities
19 April 2011
The suspension of the Integrated Programmes subsidy scheme is unfortunate. However, the WOTRO board is dedicated to optimally realise our strategy under the current circumstances. WOTRO actively seeks for new funding opportunities for research on global issues. We are developing new programmes and we work with new partners for research financing. Some of the programmes which are being developed are:
2ENRICH – Bottom of Pyramid (BoP) technology for sustainable development
WOTRO, NRF (National Science Foundation, South Africa) and STW have joined forces. Together they are going to open a programme with the aim that technological knowledge and innovation available in The Netherlands and in South Africa can be used to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The programme aims to reinforce the capacity for technological innovation in Africa. This programme on technology development in the areas of agriculture, water and energy. We hope to open a call for pre-proposals in the second half of 2011.
Migration and Conflict
NWO (WOTRO and MaGW) will start a small programme for comparative research in The Netherlands, India and South Africa into the theme Migration and Xenophobia. We plan to open the call in the second half of 2011.
Global Food Systems Research Programme
WOTRO is taking part in the development of the NWO-themes. One of these themes, “Samenleven onder Spanning” (Living together under stress), includes the sub-theme Globalisation. WOTRO designs the content of this sub-theme and focuses on how national and regional themes interconnect and become part of global issues. A theme for which this interplay is highly relevant is the global food system, about which WOTRO has developed a research programme. Currently, WOTRO is looking for partnerships with the private sector within this programme. The cooperation between the public and the private sector seems particularly appropriate for research on food systems.
Urbanising Deltas of the World
In collaboration with STW, KvK-Knowledge for Climate and the Delta Alliance, NWO is currently developing a new programme: Urbanising Deltas of the World. The programme aims to contribute to global water and food security and the sustainable economic development in river delta’s worldwide by providing more effective and efficient responses to increasing pressure and rapid change. The programme intends to launch a first call later this year.
TASENE
In cooperation with COSTECH Tanzania and SIDA Sweden, WOTRO is developing a research programme called TASENE. Within the next month an open call for collaborative research of post-doc researchers from Tanzania and either Sweden or the Netherlands will be released. The call will be posted on the websites of the three participating funding organisations, research proposals should be submitted to COSTECH who will manage this first call of TASENE.
PopDev
WOTRO is also in the process of developing a call for research on population, reproductive health and economic development in collaboration with funding partners from Europe and the USA. This joint call will be a follow-up to the previous jointly funded PopDev call by WOTRO and the Hewlett Foundation.
