Objective

The aim of the programme is to increase the quality and quantity of PhD research in the Netherlands and to strengthen scientific cooperation with China, by inviting highly talented Chinese PhD candidates to conduct research at selected Dutch graduate schools.

Application

Who can apply

Chinese students who:

are enrolled as full time student at one of the Chinese 'Project 211'universities or the Graduate Universities of CAS or CASS. Students can apply if they are:

  • last year masterstudent
  • 3rd year fast or combination track students (unless the Graduate School excludes this possibility). or
  • 1st year PhD student

meet all requirements for a CSC scholarship

Researchers from abroad may apply

What can be applied for

A PhD position at a Dutch graduate school for a maximum period of 48 months.

When can be applied

  • Closing date for submitting proposals (to NWO) was 4 October 2011

Extra Information

  • As part of the selection procedure a match-making event will take place in the
    Netherlands from 16 to 20 January 2012; candidates need a passport and have to be available for this trip.;
  • The application must be completed with a letter of recommendation from a researcher affiliated to one of the selected Chinese institutes who supervised the candidate.

Selection

Criteria

  • Scientific quality, added value and societal impact of the research proposal
  • Excellence, motivation and English proficiency of the candidate

Procedure

An initial selection on the basis of academic quality will be made by an NWO committee.
The selected applications will be presented to the graduate schools.

A final selection of maximum 2 candidates per graduate school will be made after the match-making event in the Netherlands. All selected candidates will then have to submit an application for a scholarship to the CSC.

Obligatory attachments to the application

  • Letter of recommendation (from a professor of one of the universities mentioned under 3.1 at which the Master diploma will be obtained); for fast track/combination track students: including statement of master level
  • Copy of English proficiency test results (IELTS or TOEFL ibt)
  • Copy of master diploma, and statement of enrollment, and the most recent academic transcripts both in English and Chinese
  • Copy of the personal information page of your passport, with a clearly visible picture and number

Additional information

Budget

The selection procedure – including the match-making event – is covered by the programme. The PhD research will be covered by the CSC scholarship and carried out at the graduate schools.
