Call for Integrated Programmes 2010-2011
A new call for Integrated Programmes is now open for preliminary applications. The Integrated Programme scheme is aimed at supporting excellent problem-oriented interdisciplinary research to the benefit of development and societal issues in developing countries. Deadline for proposals is 2 September 2010, 12:00 hrs CET. Read more...

WOTRO researchers can apply for Open Access funding

NWO has recently launched the Incentive Fund Open Access Publications (2.5 million Euro). This fund contributes to the costs involved in publishing in open access journals. These publications have the potential to enhance the impact of research results and improve collaboration of WOTRO funded research. Interested? Awarded subsidies

Four Integrated Programmes awarded

On 14 June 2010, the WOTRO board awarded four Integrated Programmes. The programmes address the following issues: Linking local action to international climate agreements in tropical dry forests (Mexico), Land governance and decentralisation in post conflict context (Uganda, Burundi and Sudan), Offshore service development (Philippines and India) and Sustainable energy (India and Thailand). 1.5 million euro for climate change and Sustainable Earth research
NWO and the Knowledge for Climate research programme together allocated 1.5 million euro for research into climate change adaptation and into the relationship between land use and climate change. Ten postdoc students will be able to work on this. The research will make interconnections between three spearheads of the Sustainable Earth theme: modelling, uncertainty and administrative aspects. NWO Spinoza Prizes
On 7 June 2010, NWO announced the four winners of the NWO Spinoza Prize 2010. The winners are psychologist Naomi Ellemers, astronomer Marijn Franx, chemist Piet Gros and classicist Ineke Sluiter. Each of them will receive 2.5 million euro to spend on research of their choice. The prize is the highest award in Dutch science. Read more...

Former WOTRO researcher Dr Jonne Rodenburg receives CGIAR award
The CGIAR Science Award for Promising Young Scientist was given to former WOTRO researcher Dr Jonne Rodenburg, weed specialist at the Africa Rice Center. Dr Rodenburg was recognized for his work on developing socially acceptable integrated weed management strategies for resource poor rice farmers. Watch video...

Follow-up discussion on the WRR report
After an initial round of general opinion (Dutch | International) on the report Less Pretension, More Ambition by the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), The Broker is now launching an online follow-up discussion on the future of aid and foreign policy under the aegis of a global development strategy. Femke Brandt studies labour relations on commercial trophy-hunting farms in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa where commercial farmers increasingly convert to wildlife-based production. Being a researcher in South Africa presented Femke with many challenges. Read more…


Highlight of Research Results

Neotropical lowland forests mainly affected by climate
PhD Marisol Toledo de Vroomans showed that climate is the most important factor in shaping tropical lowland forests in Bolivia. The results show that with future climate change drastic shifts can be expected in the species composition, structure, and dynamics of these tropical forests. Read more...


Publications

AWT underscores the relevance of WOTRO's strategic choices
Last month the Dutch Advisory Board on Knowledge and Technology Policy (AWT) published a report called 'Knowledge without Borders: Knowledge and Innovation from a Global Perspective'. The AWT recommends that the Netherlands shifts its knowledge and innovation policy from a Dutch, or European, perspective to a global perspective. It also argues that knowledge and innovation policy should take a central place in the Dutch development policy. This tallies well with the WOTRO approach, especially as it will now take on a new shape in the strategy 2011-2014. Read more...

Newsletter Sustainable Earth
'Sustainable Earth' is one of NWO's themes in research. Subjects are human behaviour, use of natural resources and ecology, all for a sustainable planet Earth. The June Newsletter is now available with biologist and botanist Huub Löffler in the spotlight. He tells about his research programme in the Netherlands and Indonesia on alternative use of agricultural crops. Read more…

28 September - NWO-Talent Classes
The NWO-Talent Classes are, like the NWO-Talent Days, days during which young researchers can make contacts and acquire skills that a scientist does not usually pick up during his training, such as networking, presentations for the media and successful publishing. The Talent Classes are an intensive one day workshop. NWO organizes these days six times a year. Read more…

Life Sciences Momentum is the event of choice for discovering the latest developments in Dutch life sciences, the best place to meet colleagues and for forging new business.
