Four Capacity Building Grants awarded in second round 2002
13 November 2003
From 2002 onwards WOTRO has initiated a new programme with small grants for capacity building. The objectives of this programme are to provide additional facilities for translating research from science to society and between South and North, for institutional and individual capacity building and for new or continued international co-operation between researchers and institutes from developing countries and the Netherlands. Three types of grants can be distinguished within the programme:| - Partnership establishment grants for senior researchers at Dutch institutions; |
| - Dissemination grants for all WOTRO research; |
| - Travel grants for former WOTRO researchers from developing countries. |
In September 2002 the WOTRO board awarded the following projects with a capacity building grant:
Partnership grant for the Establishment of the “Kilimanjaro Centre for HIV/AIDS Management and Research” at KCMC, Tumaini University, Moshi, Tanzania.
HIV/AIDS is an increasing problem in many Sub-Saharan nations, including Tanzania. AIDS is the third most common cause of admission to the medical wards. To deal adequately with this problem, an AIDS Clinic is being established at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, and will be opened on World Aids Day, December 1, 2002. In addition to offering service and care to patients, the AIDS Clinic will be the basis for research into clinical as well as basic aspects of HIV/AIDS. With the WOTRO grant a workshop will be organized at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre to work out joint research proposals and international support, a symposium on AIDS will be (partially) financed and travel expenses will be covered for two members of staff of KCMC who will visit the Netherlands for specific additional training.

Partnership grant for the organisation of a seminar for the establishment of a research network to further develop a research programme on ”Land and Livelihoods in Southern and Eastern Africa”.
Land has been a source of conflict and poverty in the region of Southern and Eastern Africa. In Kenya, land related ethnic violence led to the displacement of approx. 300.000 people. In Zimbabwe, recent politically instigated violence first of all rallies about land. There is a growing demand for land, which under condition of population growth results in an increasing number of conflicts over rights and access to land. With the WOTRO grant a seminar will be organised that contributes to the joint development of a fully-fledged research programme on ‘Land and Livelihoods in Southern and Eastern Africa’. Anticipated research topics will be positioned at the emerging interfaces between socio-technological regimes, institutional arrangements, agro-ecology and market regimes and how this affects the land and livelihood problems.
