Professor E. Smaling new member WOTRO Board

With effect from 1 September 2009, the General board of NWO has appointed professor Eric Smaling to the WOTRO board. Professor Smaling gained his doctorate in 1993 from Wageningen University and Research Centre. He started his career at ITC (1983/84), as a member of a team that carried out soil and land surveys in two provinces in Atjeh (Indonesia).

Since 1998 Eric Smaling has been Professor of Sustainable Agriculture at Wageningen University and Research Centre. He returned to the ITC, an international institute in Enschede, in September 2004, 20 years after his departure.

On 12 June 2007 Smaling became a senator for the Socialist Party in the Dutch House of Representatives. He is responsible for the portfolios foreign affairs, defence and development cooperation. In addition to this Smaling writes children's books and regularly acts as a freelance consultant for organisations such as the World Bank and FAO.
