New awards within the Mosaic programme

NWO has recently granted twenty-four research applications within the Mozaļek/Mosaic programme, three of which are related to the research field of WOTRO. The programme is designed to attract more ethnic minority graduates into academic research.

The three projects related to WOTRO research are:

From political liberalization to de-liberalization: post-Islamism and state-society relations in Iran (1979-2005), Drs. P. Jafari 
From 1997 to 2005, Iran witnessed a process of political liberalization and de-liberalization. Jafaris intention is to explore this process in the context of Iran's changing state-society relations and economy, in order to gain insight into the social forces that contribute to democratization or alternatively the persistence of authoritarian rule. 

Global-Local Encounters: Impacts of Community-based Tourism in Turkish Highlands, Mr. E L Luleciler MSc 
This research focuses on the socio-spatial conflicts caused by global-local encounters. In the case of Turkish highlands, implementation of community-based tourism caused protests among certain communities, blended into Islamic revivalism and land speculations. By comparing different communities, the aim of this research is to conceptualize what sustainability means in spatial terms.

Immunological memory induced by attenuated malaria parasites, C. K. Nganou Makamdop
Every thirty seconds, a child in Africa dies of malaria. Development of a vaccine is critical. Induction of persistent immunological memory is essential for an effective vaccine. The researcher aims to study protection and memory induced by (genetically) attenuated malaria parasites, which is a novel malaria vaccine concept.
