16 April 2007

The governing board of NWO has appointed Manuela Monteiro as new member of the Executive Board of WOTRO as of April 1, 2007. Manuela Monteiro studied Germanic Philology (English and German) at the University of Lisbon, and graduated cum laude in non-western Sociology at VU University Amsterdam. From 1979 until 1993 she worked as programme officer and programme coordinator Africa and became adjunct director Programmes at Hivos, the Humanist Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries. In 1993 Manuela Monteiro left Hivos to become director of PSO.
In 2002 Manuela Monteiro went back to Hivos, where she was appointed as executive director. Hivos is a Dutch non-governmental organisation inspired by humanist values. Together with local organisations in developing countries, Hivos seeks to contribute to a free, fair and sustainable world in which citizens - women and men - have equal access to the resources and opportunities for their development. And where they can actively and equally participate in decision-making processes that determine their lives, their society and their future.
